Structured cabling carries the voice, data and video that every other system in the building depends on. Whether the site is a government facility, a commercial office or an education building, the cabling is the part nobody sees and everybody relies on.

A standards-compliant installation is laid out in a star topology, with every outlet terminating at a central patch panel in a 19-inch rack. From there any outlet can be patched to a network switch as a data port, or to a telecom patch panel as a voice port — so the same infrastructure serves whatever the floor plan turns into later.

Inferior cabling is behind as much as 70% of network downtime. A compliant, properly dressed and fully labelled installation eliminates most of it. Equally important is the documentation: a cabling schedule cuts the time needed to modify the original installation, extends the useful life of the plant, and means one technician can trace a fault instead of three.

Design comes first. A network built only for today's headcount becomes a constraint within two years, so we size and structure the infrastructure around where the organisation is heading — then keep it running with proactive monitoring rather than waiting for the call.

Access control governs who enters a building and where they can go once inside. At the simple end that is a keypad, swipe card or audio intercom on a single entrance. At the other, a computer-based system managing multiple gates, barriers and doors, each requiring a corporate pass.

The functional design matters more than the hardware. A system specified without thinking through shift patterns, visitor flow, fire egress and who administers the credentials will be worked around within a month. We advise on what needs to be decided before anything is ordered.

Design can be developed from our own survey or from client-supplied specification drawings, taking account of the existing infrastructure. Once the design and manufacturer are agreed, we quote the full scope as a single-source solution, and our own engineers carry out the installation.

A PABX is effectively a private version of the telephone company's switching office. Using a single access number across multiple lines, it controls incoming and outgoing calls, connecting outside callers to internal extensions and extensions to each other.

Our systems are specified for the business in front of us and extended with new features and lines as it grows, rather than replaced. We provide the complete scope — design, installation and maintenance — and work closely with the client first to understand how calls actually move through the organisation before proposing anything.

IPTV distributes broadcast-quality digital television and video over an existing building or campus IP network, to a practically unlimited number of users, with configuration, management and control held centrally.

Because it is built on industry standards it integrates readily with adjacent systems — digital signage, and the property management systems used in hotels and hospitals — so the television becomes part of the guest or patient service rather than a separate installation.

For a property already running structured cabling and a capable switch fabric, IPTV usually means adding a head-end and set-top boxes rather than building a second distribution network.
